Hip hop, the word itself means so many different things to so many different people. From your average high school student you might hear the words style, experiences, and the streets. But from a the teacher you might hear the words drugs, violence, and negativity. Where does one draw the line between music and word spoken for derogatory purposes.
In a way hip hop can be compared to everything in life. For example, one might think that the sunrise is beautiful brightness and the start of a new day, where another might see it as darkness and the end of another day. In retrospect it all depends on where you're standing in this world of music.
Surely hip hop has changed since its debut in the 1980's. I recall it being more positive in promoting self awareness and attempting to uplift the community. To me now it's the complete opposite but you can still find traces of its essence in some hip hop music released today.
So I guess the only way anybody can find the true meaning of hip hop is perhaps taking a listen to it with an opened mind and without any premeditated thoughts or opinions of dislike. Then and only then, will you find the true meaning of hip hop.
